The exchange rate policy of the RBI in 1980's was limited to pegging the rupee/sterling rate in the morning and responding to the volatility in the market by changing its reference dollar rates each time the market threatened to break out of its controlled range. The exchange rate policy of the RBI is guided by the need to reduce excess volatility. The Reserve Bank has been prepared to make sales and purchases of foreign currency in order to even out lumpy demand and supply in the relatively thin foreign exchange market and to smoothen jerky movements. Any act of interference by a Central Bank like the RBI in influencing the exchange rate is called as ‘dirty floats’. But in India it is referred to as ‘managed floats’. In adverse circumstances of demand for dollars going up more than the supply of dollars, it results in rupee losing value (depreciation).
