Ocean spot market rates
Ocean freight is around 50 cents/kg, and a China-US shipment will take around 30-40 days. At about $4 per kilo, a China-US shipment between 150 kg and 500 kg can economically go air freight and will take around 8-10 days. Express air freight is a few days quicker, but more expensive. Some believe the spot rate market is a place to save money, but we’ll get to that idea shortly but until then let’s jump into the discussion on contract and spot freight rates. A spot freight rate is the price a freight service provider offers a shipper at a point in time to move their product from point A to point B. Reefer freight rates have also risen slightly to a current national average of $2.17 per mile. This is a three cent increase from the August average. Reefer rates remain highest in the Midwest, averaging $2.52 per mile, and lowest in the Northeast, with an average of $1.92 per mile.
